The Chain is a multimedia puppetry performance that reimagines a puppet’s wish to become a “real human” as a metaphor for love, control, and the illusion of freedom. Beneath its fairy-tale surface lies a reflection on the emotional power dynamics within family structures — an exploration of affection as manipulation, dependence as confinement, and rebellion as a form of awakening. The work ultimately confronts the inherited weight of patriarchy and the desire to break free from it.
Featuring a unique shared-body design in which the puppeteer and the puppet move with a single pair of legs, The Chain blurs the boundary between controller and controlled, revealing a fragile, co-dependent relationship that is both tender and suffocating.
Created, directed, and performed by Jean, who also designed and built the puppet, this solo performance will premiere in April 2025 at The Cavendish Arms, London, as a public ticketed show inviting audiences into an intimate journey of wishes, chains, and the silent rebellion against familial love.
